The Australian Muscle
Classic muscle cars from the 1960s and 1970s are highly desirable vehicles for enthusiasts across Australia. However, not all insurance companies are able to offer insurance for muscle cars. At MB Insurance we are happy to look to insure your muscle car, whether it be a US import or an Aussie classic.
The first true Australian muscle car would be the 1967 Ford Falcon XR GT. This performance variant of the Falcon was solely available with a 289 cubic inch V8 engine and initially only came with a manual transmission. Later editions of the GT Falcon include the iconic Phase 1, 11 and 111 along with Superbird and John Goss Special edition Hardtop.
Holden didn’t want to miss out on the action, so in 1968 we saw the introduction of the HK Monaro. In time the Monaro became available with a range topping GTS 350, and when the HQ was introduced in 1971 you could get a Monaro as a four door sedan. The Monaro was discontinued in the HZ series as the GTS, however, was reintroduced in 2001 (Now treated as a modern classic).
Chrysler Australia also had a range of muscle cars in the 1960's and 70's. The Valiant Pacer was a six cylinder model with high performance hemi engines. In 1971 the Charger model was available, with 1972 seeing the introduction of the 340 cubic inch V8 E55 flagship model. You could also select the E37, E38 or E49 six cylinder model.
American Heritage
Many iconic muscle cars have originated from the United States. These include the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro and Chevrolet Corvette. Whilst these models originated in the 1950's (1953 for the Corvette) and 60's, you can still purchase a new Mustang or Corvette in Australia to this day. They remain one of the few new vehicles for sale with V8 engines and a purchase price under $250,000.
