The Toyota 86 is two door, rear wheel drive, 2+2 sports coupe that was launched in 2012. Toyota shocked the Australian market at launch with its competitive price, with the initial recommended retail price of $29,990 plus on road costs for the GT manual. Due to the 86's competitive pricing, sales were very strong with over 20,000 Toyota 86 models sold in Australia by 2018. There were very few competitors in the market, as many manufacturers had abandoned the affordable rear wheel drive sports coupe market.
The original Toyota 86 was powered by a naturally aspirated four cylinder 2.0 litre engine. Six speed manual and automatic transmission options were available and variants included the GT and higher specification GTS. The Subaru BRZ model is also sold in Australia which is based on the same platform as the Toyota 86. The Toyota 86 model was upgraded in 2022 and rebadged GR86.
The Toyota 86 has a very strong enthusiast following throughout Australia. It is admired for its rear wheel drive handling, light weight and spirited performance. Many 86’s have been upgraded with aftermarket modifications and accessories to enhance both the appearance and performance of the vehicle. These can include larger alloy wheels, lowered suspension, body kits and engine performance upgrades.
