From vintage Valiants and Chargers to modern Chrysler performance vehicles, MB Insurance offers insurance solutions tailored to Chrysler enthusiasts.
History
Chrysler has a long and interesting history in Australia. The Chrysler factory in Adelaide manufactured Plymouth, De Soto and Dodge passenger cars until it focused on the Chrysler Royal in 1957.
In 1962 Chrysler commenced production of the Valiant R and S Series.
With their distinctive styling and strong six-cylinder performance, the early Valiants quickly established themselves as serious competitors to contemporary Holden and Ford models.
Valiant production continued until 1981, with the last year of manufacture taking place after the factory had been acquired by Mitsubishi.
Throughout the 1970s Chrysler also manufactured other models in Adelaide including the Galant, Charger, Chrysler by Chrysler and Sigma models. Sadly, all Australian production of Chrysler vehicles ceased in 1981.
Return to market
Chrysler returned to Australia in 1997 with the Voyager and luxury Grand Voyager people movers.
The retro-inspired PT Cruiser arrived in 2000, standing out with its distinctive 1930s-inspired styling. It was initially powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, upgraded to 2.4 litres in 2004.
Sold as a wagon and later a convertible, the PT Cruiser remained on sale until 2010. More than 1.3 million were sold worldwide, including over 7,000 in Australia, and it continues to enjoy a strong enthusiast following.
The Modern Era
In 2005, the large 300C sedan arrived in Australia, with styling inspired by the Bentley Mulsanne of the 1990s. The Sebring was also available in both sedan and convertible variants. Chrysler stopped importing the 300 in 2021 which was the last new Chrysler model sold in Australia.
The hero car of the modern Chrysler is the legendary 300C SRT-8.
The second-generation 300 SRT was also adopted by the NSW Police Force for Highway Patrol duties following the end of local Ford Falcon and Holden Commodore production.
